But there are some other concerns that we have to contend with to make sure that we all have a safe and healthy winter season. As truck drivers, we know that the beauty of the season also brings some dangers with driving. Cold conditions can cause issues with our vehicles and affect road conditions.

It is very important that we take care of both our bodies and our vehicles, so that both are running in top form during cold times. Luckily, we can take steps to manage these issues to enjoy a safe and healthy winter season!

Winter Physical Body Tune Up

Many health problems come in the winter. As they say, “an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure”. The winter weather brings on some particular health considerations of its own. Winter is a prime time for some illnesses such as the common cold, stomach ailments and pneumonia. And due to the icy weather, there can be more broken bones due to falls from slippery surfaces.

In the spirit of family, like a brother or sister, we want to take a moment to nudge you in the right direction for your health. Throughout the snowy season, it is tempting to stay indoors and curl up. When you’re healthy, you inspire others. It’s like a chain reaction of positivity. Let’s talk about some ways that all of us can stay healthy this winter.

Eating for a Healthy Body

One of the easiest ways to start is to make sure that we are eating a balanced diet to keep our immune system strong to ward off illnesses. Eating lots fruits and vegetables, lean protein sources and complex carbohydrates help keep our body running in top form. Here are five foods that are recommended to bolster our immune system and keep us healthy.

Five Excellent Winter Foods

CITRUS FRUITS – Most of us realize that citrus fruits contain a lot of Vitamin C which is great for warding off winter bugs.
LEAFY, DARK GREENS – Kale, collard greens, escarole, and chard offer a wealth of vitamins A, K and C as well as folic acid.
WINTER SQUASH – Winter squashes such as acorn, butternut and spaghetti squash are wonderful for providing Vitamins A, B6, C and K, folate and potassium. They have a wonderful rich taste as well and there is such a huge winter variety to choose from.
OATMEAL – Oatmeal is high in nutrients, particularly zinc which is great for immune function.
BERRIES – Berries such as strawberries, blueberries and raspberries are wonderful sources of nutrients. They are particularly easy to get in the winter by simply purchasing them frozen. They are easily used right out of the freezer and can be added to many recipes as well as smoothies, oatmeal and yogurt.

It is also very important to remember to drink an adequate amount of water. Most health authorities recommend around two liters of water a day for adults to keep the body running smoothly. Water helps the body regulate temperature and keeps the cells and tissues operating properly. Water can keep you feeling fuller which can help you eat less and avoid winter weight gain. It also helps bolster your immune function!

Walking is a Must for Staying Strong

Even though the cold can be very discouraging, it is so important that we still go ahead and get outside and go for that stroll, even if it is a couple of times around the trucking yard. Whether you do stroll at a leisurely pace or have a complex workout, it is important that we all keep a regular routine going for at least three to four times a week throughout the winter. It keeps the muscles and body strong, wards off illness and keeps our metabolism working efficiently. It also helps to ward off depression and seasonal sadness disorders.

Health in Winter

UPKEEP ON VEHICLES: Winter is a time of year that trucks must be kept running in top form. Keep fluids checked and filled. Make sure that regular maintenance is performed on time. Check to be sure that winter weather gear is on board such as jumper cables, road flares, first aid kits, spare tires, chains and safety cones. Make sure that each of these are in good working condition.

INSPECT LIGHTS, TIRES, WIRING, BRAKES, TRACTOR TRAILERS: Make sure that wiring is in good shape and there are no frays or worn places. Check to see that all lights are in good working order and no lamps need to be replaced. Have brakes checked to be sure they are working properly. Check all tires for good air pressure and be sure to have a good working spare ready. Be sure that all these things are in proper working order on the tractor trailer as well.

REVIEW SAFETY PLANS: As chemical tanker truck drivers, it is so important to know the safety plan inside and out in case of an accident. Be sure that you are able to implement the plan automatically if necessary.
Always Be Aware of Weather on Trucking Routes
Always be prepared by never skipping any steps the pre-trip inspection checking the weather at starting and ending points of the driving route as well as points in between. Continue to monitor weather for changes that occur so that bad weather does not present a surprise.

CONSIDERATION: It is always a good idea to just take a moment to consider the importance of the job and contact your manager if necessary. Be sure that you are using a good amount of caution during the winter season such as using extra caution on overpasses or bridges, giving yourself extra distance between other vehicles, avoiding unnecessary hard braking, reducing speed when necessary and pulling off if roads become impassable at any time.

The winter season can be tricky and even dangerous for drivers. There are things that we must think about and prepare for before we even begin driving in some difficult weather situations.
